Twitter is a phenomenon. Teens use it, elderly people use it, adults use it, and businesses use it. You will encounter it in everyday life.
So what the heck is Twitter?
Twitter is a website where you can sign up for free and “tweet” about what you are doing. You could tweet about what you had for breakfast or when you buy something. You can tweet about cool links on the web or recent news. You can tweet about anything, anytime you want.
The first thing you need is an account. Accounts are and will always be free. You will not have to spend money on anything when using Twitter.
Upon signing up, you will see a big headline, “What Are You Doing,” and a text box. You can type up to 140 characters or less. You are limited to 140 characters because brevity is one of Twitter’s main purposes.
Feel free to type whatever you want in the box.
Now we need to fill out your profile. Feel free to upload a photo (real photos work best, but avatars are okay too). Add a short bio with links to a website or blog if you have one. You can also change the design or upload your own design here.
Now are you feeling like a Twitter whiz? Good for you! You only have a little left to learn.
Twitter is about what you are doing. Since most people don’t just sit at a computer all day, you need to be able to tweet on the go. Therefore, you need a way to update your Twitter account when you are away from the computer.
Activating your phone so that you can text tweets is very easy. Heck, there are even applications for it. If your phone doesn’t have an automatic Twitter application, follow Twitter’s directions to quickly activate your phone. Once activated, just text what you want to “tweet” to the number provided by Twitter.
“@” is used to tweet to specific members. Here is an example: @Jake @Bob @Jack Hey guys.
Your @ tweet will be displayed in the person’s “@s” section. You can see who “@s” you by clicking “@” (Your twitter nickname). “@” (Your Twitter username) can be found in the sidebar.
Note: Your “@” tweet is still public. “Message” a member to send a message out privately.
Now you need to deal with “following”. When you follow a person, you can see all their tweets. When someone follows you, they can see your tweets. If you only want a select amount of people to see your tweets, you can set your account to private.
You now know almost all there is to know about Twitter. The rest you can learn by exploring the Twitter interface and tweeting.
