Twitter is one of the hottest micro-blogging platforms to hit social media. Everyone is posting tweets these days, but tweets can get lost in cyberspace if tweets aren’t targeted accordingly.
Follow these guidelines and your company will be one step ahead in the online marketing game.
- Sales don’t happen overnight – Remember that companies need to build a presence on Twitter. With any social networking site, it’s all about branding and building trust with Twitter members (your potential customers and clients). Sales don’t happen overnight. Take the time to contribute useful, valuable information to the Twitter community.
- DO not SPAM followers – This is the best way lose followers. Don’t be a “tweet happy” poster. Stick to a few target market-focused updates/posts per day. Remember you want to promote your company’s site and branding – you don’t want to scare people away by blasting out thousands of updates per day.
- Offer enticing contests or “freebies.” Remember to include a call to action – i.e. if followers check out your website and sign up to become a member, they will receive a free gift. You want them to act NOW! Keep tweets simple and to the point. Add your website or blog link but don’t come across as “gimmicky.”
- Create a “buzz” – Create an online buzz with your updates. You want to come across as an expert in your field. The more people who trust and like you, the more people will want to follow you.
- Follow people in your industry/niche – When people in your particular industry see that you are following them, they will in turn follow you and then their friends/colleagues will follow you, etc.
- Be careful of your followers – Screen your followers. You don’t want just anyone following you. If you have clients following you and they see a “questionable” follower on your site, you might lose a client or customer. Be extra cautious.
- Remember Netiquette – Be polite and courteous. People tend to be too casual when tweeting – don’t fall into that trap. Your tweets represent your company and brand so remember to always post professional tweets. Don’t be like the PR guy who lost his job because of an unethical, unprofessional tweet (and he lost the company their biggest client – Fed Ex!)
