Marketing

Email marketing these days is a real challenge. You have to contend with everything from hundreds of competing emails to overly zealous spam filters. It can be tough, but the first step to beating out the crowds and making sure your email gets in front of the right people is the subject line.

Your email subject line pretty much determines the fate of your emails. Keep in mind that people are constantly deleting emails, so it’s easy for them to get rid of yours in the blink of an eye. They’ll be scanning the row of email subject lines and you have a split second to catch their attention.
Here are a few tips to help you write an email subject line that is going to grab people’s attention and get those clicks:

1. Keep it short. Most email programs chop the subject line at 50 characters. You need to get your point across in those few characters or it probably won’t get opened at all. You can learn a lot by reading news headlines, since these often fit a lot of information into a very small space.

2. Make it personal. Using people’s names in your emails can convey a sense of familiarity and they will be far more likely to open anything with their name on it.

3. Ask a question. Most people feel obligated to answer a question that is asked of them, so put that knowledge to good use. Ask them something like “Do you want to make more money this month?” and you will see higher click through rates.

4. Tell them what’s going on. Sometimes it doesn’t pay to play coy. If you’re having a sale, let them know. Not everyone will be interested, but you’ll get the clicks from people who are looking for what you have to offer.

5. Keep trying new things. Testing new ways of getting your message across is vital. Your audience won’t be the same as every other audience out there, so what works for one group of readers might be completely ineffectual with another group. Keep this in mind and keep testing.

Writing great email subject lines can mean the difference between losing your audience before you even had a chance to talk or getting them to open your email. Once inside, of course, you still have to hold their attention, but getting readers to even pay attention to the email is the first step in a successful email marketing campaign.
